In David Foster Wallace’s piece, “This is Water,” he discusses how “there is no such thing as not worshipping.” The word worship provokes thoughts of church or praying, but it’s much more than that. It not only pertains to religion but other notions like power, wealth or beauty. Therefore, “everybody worships,” as it can be done unconsciously.
But focusing more specifically, as a highschooler, I am one of many who care greatly about grades. Grades represent a pathway to college, so the significance leads to worship. Thus, getting bad grades is upsetting because it’s like stepping off the pathway.
My life at the moment is centered on grades. I plan according to the amount of homework I have. Homework equals grades but more deeply, grades actually represent my future. Clearly, I care about my future, and I want to be able to live comfortably. If I get good grades in high school then I'll get into a good college and if I get into a good college then I'll get a good job and if I get a good job then I can make some bank and live the life I want to have. But then again, there is no guarantee that good grades will equal security so now my life becomes absolutely pointless!
Obviously, education is important, but solely focusing all energy on grades is unhealthy. There are numerous experience to have as a high schooler, and to me, one of the most important is having friends. I worship my friends. They are very important to me, and I am able to make memories with them that I will cherish. They'll be a part of me forever while grades on the other hand, won't. So shift your perspective and think about what really matters in the long run.

  2. I agree and I think that a lot of high school students care too much about their grades. Yes, they are important in setting you up for the future, but a balanced life is more important in my opinion. Some extra cash in the bank when I'm middle aged doesn't seem like its worth sacrificing my youth for. Live for the future a little, don't throw it away, but also live for the present.
