On page 17 of Spiegelman’s work, Vladek is describing how he bought a frame for Anja’s picture. Although it was a simple gesture, it shows how sincere his feelings for Anja were, compared to his negligence towards Lucia. The photo Anja sent shows her wearing a modest, expensive coat which reveals her wealth and respectable upbringing. It is clear that Vladek is actively searching for a wealthy woman in order to bring himself up. He ignored Lucia’s request to become engaged as she has no money to bring to the marriage. Despite this self-centered behavior, Vladek truly loves Anja. His fondness for Anja is shown through his affectionate description of her “ beautiful letters.” He does, however, admit that Anja is not as attractive as Lucia, but her “sensitive and intelligent” nature made it easy for him to
fall in love with her. Although, Vladek is still cautious as he doesn’t want to get involved with a disorganized woman. This shows to true nature of Vladek’s character, while his love for Anja legitimate, he watches out for himself and only makes diligent decisions. These traits are what allowed Vladek to not only become a successful businessman, but also survive the Holocaust.

ReplyDeleteI still am not sure whether Vladeks feelings were true love or if he was just blinded by the wealth but, I do definitely think that if Lucia was wealthy he would've married her instead.

ReplyDeleteI tend to disagree with the fact that the major factor in their marriage was money. I agree it was a factor, but not a super important one. Good analysis nevertheless. 7/10 might recommend to a friend.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Vladek truly did love Anja, but money definitely played a role in their marriage. Without Anja's parents' wealth, Vladek wouldn't really have been able to open all those factories and thrive in his businesses. I like how you looked deeper into Vladek, Anja, and Lucia's love triangle and thoroughly analyzed it. Good job Malavika!
ReplyDeleteI didn’t realize Vladek could be a gold digger. But now I realize that it had a lot to do with status. Despite that, Vladek did truly love him. I love the video you included LOL
