i love my brother (no incest)

From the beginning of the novel itself, the readers know Macon does not like Pilate. He says “that woman’s no good, she’s a snake (54).” Obviously, there must’ve been a major issue between the Dead siblings for Macon to accuse her of being a “snake.” But when he relays his past, he talks of his family fondly, calling his home “Lincoln’s Heaven.”
Based off the first few chapters, it is assumed that Macon dislikes Pilate just because she isn’t wealthy. This clearly is a stupid reason for someone to cut ties with their own sibling for. Furthermore, the theme of not valuing family is even seen Milkman, who views his family’s tradition for Sunday afternoon rides as “a burden (31).” Both Milkman and Macon lack commitment to their family, but for superficial reasons.
I come from a loving family. However, I unfortunately do not spend quality time with my parents because of their busy jobs. The family member I see way too much though, is my obnoxious ten year old brother. (Even right now, I’m struggling trying to finish this blog on time because I was helping him with his science project the entire day) Although we spend a lot of time together, we, like most siblings, have a love-hate relationship which is further strengthened by our six year age gap. Despite this major difference, I still value and love my brother (most of the time at least).
Familial relationships are very important to me. So, I’m very curious to learn what truly happened to between Macon and Pilate that destroyed their relationship.
