unlovable

I found myself yesterday, randomly watching the rom com 500 days of summer. From the beginning itself, the movie was captivating with references to my best friend’s favorite band (The Smiths). I knew this was going to be special.
The narrator straight up tells you this isn't a typical love story, but I didn’t realize that was true till halfway through. To simply put, the movie is about Tom and Summer and well, their relationship. I connected with the Tom easily. We both were believers of fate: everything happens for a reason and what is meant to happen will happen. Thus, when Tom realizes that Summer is the one, I thought wow it’s meant to be. But sadly (spoiler alert) Tom doesn't get the girl. Sucks right? But no! After his breakup, Tom decided it's finally time to follow his dreams of becoming an architect. Here's where fate actually comes in. Tom attends an interview where he meets a girl who shares the dislike for parking lots and his favorite spot in the city; believe it or not, her name is Autumn. Coincidence? I think not!
As cliche as it sounds, this movie was life changing to me. It showed me how even if you’re at a low point, getting past that leads to something better. Summer may have ended, but Autumn is coming.
Milkman has a similar spiritual awakening. When Guitar and him got pulled over by white cops for being “colored”, he experienced racism firsthand (204). He finally is able to think past upper class mentality and connect with the other blacks who face similar treatment. The impact on his character is further emphasised when he told to Macon about First Corinthians and Henry. He, at last, cares for his sister’s wellbeing after not paying attention to them for years.
I liked how you alluded to your favorite movie. At first I didn’t see where it was going but it tied in nicely.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I love the Smiths. I like how you connected the events and experiences of Milkman to your own life, and show how universal moments like these are. Good job!
ReplyDeleteGreat movie! I love how you connected a movie you enjoyed to what we are discussing in class.
